The evaluator described here is implemented in the plurimath gem of the 0.11 series (Plurimath::Math::Evaluation). It evaluates arithmetic over the tree exactly as written: it never rewrites the tree, never rounds behind the caller’s back, and never returns a value that is not a real, finite number — the alternative is one of the typed errors. Uncertainty propagation is not part of this edition: the model of PM 1002 carries uncertainty nodes, this document’s evaluator does not compute with them, and the propagation rules will arrive in this document when they arrive in the implementation.

A formula tree is content until something computes with it. Evaluation is that step: given a tree and a set of bindings — names and their numeric values — the evaluator walks the tree, applies the operations its nodes denote, and yields one number, or refuses with a typed error naming exactly what stood in the way.

The design centre is the strict error contract. Arithmetic in general notation runs into division by zero, negative square roots, logarithms of non-positive numbers, overflowing magnitudes and unbound names. Many evaluators answer such cases with NaN, Infinity or a silent fallback; this one answers with a refusal. A result is always a real, finite number, and everything else is one of eight typed errors. The effect on callers is that a successful evaluation needs no hedging: the number returned is usable, and the errors can be handled each by name.

The evaluator is deliberately small. It evaluates arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, modulo, powers, negation, the function classes the model defines, and bounded iteration for the nary sum and product. It does not simplify, does not convert units, does not propagate uncertainty, and does not solve. Every one of those is a different contract with its own semantics; this document specifies the one the implementation carries.
